Twelve matches made up round three of the summer league last night. It felt like a summer league evening, warm outside and plenty of heat on court too.
Bob’s Boasters were on the lookout for their first team win, with Susana Simoes who impressed in the previous round, looking to start strong. Susana was lively and pipped Brian Parker to give the Boasters a good start. Next up, Tom Mair s v Seb – and just like that, all the potential markers had made off to the showers! Eventually, the game got under way, lots of bear hugs later and the in-form Seb Gardiner celebrated a 3-1 win. Darren Reid then took on the unbeaten Martin Simpson . A great game that went to 5, with Darren coming out on top. Three wins for the Boasters!
I was up next against Paul Smith who said he didn’t fancy a five setter – so that’s exactly what we did. He might not have the power levels of previous weeks, but he still pushes it into those corners. Brave as a lion and only the frame of my racket helped me get over the line. What courage to still turn out and of course, great to have you about. Rematch when you’re back stronger, soon and you can put me back in my place.
Captain Bob Mc then stepped up to make it five straight wins, despite a good start for Paul Grannon . Peter Barton then impressed with a 3-0 against Ryan Ghodrat for the Pokers. 20-9 win for Bob’s Boasters.
Ged’s Jedi’s looked to knock the Stompers off their perch with a strong looking line up. Tom Hulse , giving Paul Fielding half a century – took his first win of the summer series in the first of several 5 setters. Rob Powley then continued the trend, taking a 3-2 win over Colin Winstanley in a topsy-turvy game. Graham Rigby then fought off a lively Steve Patterson to take another 3 points for the Jedis.
Mark Jones then put an end to the force, completing a 3-2 win against Kev Ferguson in what was a marathon game. Ged Clark got off to a great start against Karl Mullins , before injury put a halt to proceedings. Wishing you a speedy recovery Ged. Tom Clark and Dan Parker then played until the end of the night, ensuring the Pizza’s were crisp and the match ball semi-retired. With Tom Clark taking the game 3-2 and completing a 20-13 win over the stompers.
Finally, player of the week is Paul Smith . Easiest call ever. Halfway through it today, we are all with you.
Summer League returns in 2 weeks, 22h July. Fixtures on the board behind court 2.
