This was our final round of fixtures, taking us to the half time winter break. First up our Heswall 57s travelled to Northern Crosby , who fielded a strong side.
Brian Parker was first up and battled well in a tight game collecting a valuable point for the team. Roy Finney was up next against a lively Mark Murray. Roy took Mark to 5 but ended up on the wrong side of an 11-9 finish. Paul Granon played 3 against a very good opponent.
With much of the middle order missing, our 57s still had the big guns available. Bob Mc bamboozling Andy Chanter for a straight 3 nil win, it happens to us all Andy... Before Heswall’s UK No.8 seed Tom Clark took on Gary Powell at 1. Despite ‘not playing well’, Tom still managed to take all 3 points and conclude a very good points haul for our 57s. Crosby taking the overall match, 16 points to 9 .
Our Racketeers up next, hosting Variety at our home club. Rob Powley took on Mike Walsh at 5. Mike started off well, using his trade-mark cross court finish to take the first game. Rob then turned on the Powley Power, taking three close games and the points! I then took on the larger than life character and new HRC member Simon Cobley. Simon took the first game on a tie break, playing some extravagant front court shots. I then managed to get in front and take the next three in an entertaining game. Thanks Simon.
Paul Smith was up next against the skilful Lewis Clarke. Despite losing a match point in game 4, Paul showed some lovely stroke play to earn a very impressive 3-2 win. A fantastic effort of determination and racket skill. Then at 2, was gentle giant Matt Stapledon taking on the likeable and accomplished racketball player, Mark Evans. Mark took a very quick 2 nil lead before Matt showed why he is the clubs form player, fighting back for a 3-2 win.
Finally, No.1 Peter Barton took on Dan Parker in what would be a marathon event. Peter took the tie 3-1 to conclude a really good night for our Racketeers against a very good Variety team. 20 points to 7. Can I wish Peter and Ollie all the best at their Racketlon tournament this weekend.
Both of our teams sit high upin the league table at the half way stage, just a handful of points apart. Great effort from everyone, well done.
Player of the week is Paul Smith for a very impressive win. It is the effort we expect Paul! Paul has gone to great lengths to arrange a Karakal night tonight . 630 onwards. Racketball and Squash mix ins, please support Paul and our club. I will see you there.
Final shout for entries into the Club Squash and Racketball Opens/Handicap tournaments . The sheets are up on the respective boards, until this weekend. Get your name down!
