I asked our teams to be strong and brave this week – with a tough looking set of fixtures. We got exactly that!
First up the Racketeers were away at last years runner up, New Brighton . They were terrified at our strong looking team sheet and forfeited the game due to frostbite – or something along those lines. Rumour has it Tony Marks was being lined up to play top of the order, which, was the final push for New Brighton to concede. 20 points in the bag and two fixtures before the festive, mid-season break. A week of rest for some whilst other Racketeers headed down for a mix in session and to show support for our 57’s.
Our 57’s hosted current champions and run-away leaders - Liverpool Cricket Club without the might and skill of Bob Mc and the in-form Rob Wright. Opening up for Heswall 57’s was two-time player of the week Roy Finney . A brave fight against former Wids No.1 but there wasn’t to be a great come back on this occasion. Seb then took the fight to LCC with a great start against the very good Sam Pryke. Plenty of those left hooks gave Seb a 9-5 lead in the first game before he snatched defeat from the jaws of victory to concede the first game. Then came the strokes and rhythm as he roared to a 2-1 lead. Sam Pryke hits a very good ball and fought back to take the game 3-2. A great effort from Seb – just what we asked for.
Paul Grannon stepped up to No.3, taking on LCC captain and fellow Heswall member Jason Hopkins. Paul used his telescopic reach to put himself into a 2-0 lead. Jason then fought back to take the tie to a deciding game. Paul played the shot of the game, twisting to divert a drive from the front but pulling up injured in the process. A great performance with Jason taking the game 3-2 by default. A speedy recovery please Paul, we think you would have won that but for the injury!
Next came the Clarks. Ged put up a fight at 2, giving opportunities to those below him in the order. Then came 57’s Captain Tom Clark , up against the current Portuguese Open champion Andrew Breen. Bravery, skill and determination in abundance as Tom set the standard we all strive for. A fantastic game to watch and a superb effort from Tom taking the game to the fifth. For the third time on the night, Heswall were on the wrong side of a 3-2 defeat. LCC took the match 20-6 . Well done to everyone involved. Next up – Neston 1.
Player of the week is Tom Clark for an outstanding display of quality and determination. Well done Tom.
A reminder – the Racketball Open, Racketball Handicap and Racketball Over 55’s are all up in the lobby. As are the Squash sheets. Please get your name down for a new year start. Final’s night is Saturday April 26th. Paul and I will be taking the sheets down December 15th!
