Eleven matches made up round two of the summer league last night, the games didn’t disappoint!
A captain match up opened up the proceedings, with Rich Stapledon – buoyed after leading his team to a first round win, taking on Parker of the Pokers! It was Brian who out-poked Rich on this occasion, taking an early 3-1 win. The fleetfooted, Colin Winstanly was up next, taking on Stephen Harrison . A very solid performance for Colin, with a convincing 3-0 win. Martin Simpso n then used all his racket experience to take on a speedy Tom Mairs . A close game, with both players giving it everything. Martin coming out on top – to put the Stompers ahead in the match.
Rob Wright then looked to carry on his form against adversary Paul Grannon . Rob took this one 3-0 for another Stompers win. I’m sure Paul will be up for yet another rematch of this on-going friendly feud. Matt Stapledon then took on a returning Mark Evans , taking an excellent game 3-2 under the watchful eye of Captain senior, securing Stompers the match win. Karl Mullins then put in a terrific performance against the in-form Dan Parker to bring some much-needed points into the Pokers pot, 3-1. Overall Stompers solidified their early lead with a 19-10 win .
Meanwhile, Bob’s Boasters looked short on Boasters in the absence of Bob Mc! They took on Ged’s Jedis, who looked to have the Force with them in their search for a first win. Jayne McGrath opened the match against Susana Simoes . Both players put in a terrific performance, taking the game to the wire. Jayne came out on top with a 3-2 win on this occasion. A great watch! Seb then set upon Rob Powley , in a game that promised style v power. In a reversal of the result last year, Seb came out on top with a 3-0 win putting Boasters into a strong early lead.
Then came the fight back – Graham Rigby took an accomplished 3-1 win over the visiting Darren Reid . Captain Ged Clark , stepping down to double up his game against the lively Mark Jones . Ged showed all his experience and guile to take the game 3-0 and level the match. That left the final game of the night between Kevin Ferguson and I. We didn’t disappoint – a full five sets of effort, commitment and determination and all played in a terrific spirit. Kev came out with a 3-2 win this time… taking the match with it! Jedi’s win 16 – 9.
I cannot comment on the Pizza as it had all gone by the time Kev, and I had finished our game.
Finally, player of the week is Kevin Ferguson. Well played Kevin with both effort, style and spirit!
Summer League returns in 2 weeks, 8th July. Fixtures on the board behind court 2.
