Racketball Report Week 22

We headed into the final evening of team racketball this season, with all three Heswall teams at home. With light evenings just around the corner, temperatures and team confidence on the rise following a successful season. We started out, concerned about our ability to field two teams and stay competitive. We have done more than be competitive and picked up the Variety team along with way.

Three racketball teams directly results in more playing opportunities for our members. As a group, this has driven up standards with a few fantastic examples. The emergence of more racketball talent gives the teams and club more strength in the years ahead. There is yet more to come! As a club, three teams brings a hub of activity and with it, a thriving atmosphere.

I have been completely humbled by the support of our players this year. The team regulars, squad players, the emergency subs, the superstar loan signings and those drafted in to support our Variety team. We have had six ladies represent our teams this season and our first ladies racketball final on Finals night, just 4 weeks away. To everyone, thank you.

Last night, our Heswall 57’s hosted Crosby. Seb Gardiner took on Dave Yarwood at 5. Seb had far too much class and style, concluding a very good season for Seb with a 3-0. Well done Seb. The rising-star of Rob Wright then matched Seb with his own 3-0 win – Rob’s talent has now very much emerged! Ged Clark then had a one-to-one session with a tax inspector… coming out on top but showing his generosity by dropping a game, 3-1. Well done Ged for being the second best Clark to represent the 57’s this season!

Bob Mc then turned up at 2, with half an eye on Japan, losing this one in a tight match to Matty Fell. Bob, delivers week in, week out of the team. Rest up as come May, you’re our club Number 1 in Jersey… Finally, 57’s captain Tom Clark , fresh from the North East championships had a power hitting session with Gary Powell, as ever, coming out on top to win 3-1 and give our fabulous Heswall 57’s a 17-4 win.

Variety then hosted our Racketeers with Tom Hulse taking on Rob Powley at 5. Tom is on the up and took the first game before Rob powered his was to a 3-1 win. Very impressive season for Rob, who hasn’t ever let the team down. I was up next at 4, taking on Stephen Harrison in what I was hoping would be a quick-fire game. Stephen dug in and made the tie drag on until I eventually, got it over the line with a 3-1 win. Stephen, just like Tom and Stuart Hulse, helped out our Variety team and picked up a lot of game time in the process. The entire club benefit from your efforts, a very well done. Paul Smith then took on the returning Lewis Clarke at 3. Great to see you back Lewis. This time Paul came out on top with a 3-0 win, topping off a hugely impressive season of racketball for you.

Then came the powerhouses. Matt Stapledon came out with all the power and style that has seen his stock rise so much this season. Unbelievable performances, week in, week out. Despite this, Mark Evans , our Variety captain had other ideas and put in a very strong performance that Matty pipped 3-1 in a very tight affair. Well done Mark in guiding your side through what was at times a difficult season. We are all stronger together and have plenty of firepower to support you next season. Peter Barton , won all 5 finals in one night last year and has still found a way to improve as the season progressed. Dan Parker has had a similar journey at the top of Variety, with some fantastic results throughout the season. We knew this game would be long, but a real racketball marathon it was. Peter taking it 3-2, giving our Racketeers a 20-5 win .

LCC are league champions, with Racketeers not far behind and our 57’s just a few points behind them. It was then time for some food after the games, I’m hoping our players survived that… then our end of season trophies.

Player of the season for our 57’s goes to Rob Wright . Player of the season for our Racketeers goes to Matthew Stapeldon . Our Variety team gave theirs to Dan Parker . Fantastic seasons from all three of you.

We have club Finals night just weeks away, at the end of April, please play your games. In May, we take a team to Jersey before our Summer league returns.

Thank you for putting so much trust in me this season. Our club is a fabulous place to be, with so much squash and racketball. Let’s keep going.
